Archaeological sites to visit in Cozumel 2022

The Socca World Cup Cozumel 2022 is just around the corner and, at this point, you are probably wondering what places you can visit during your stay in this magical Mexican island.

In previous occasions we have told you about the cities, avenues and places of entertainment that you can find within the urban area of the Mexican Caribbean, but, in this opportunity, we want to tell you about the archaeological sites that will make you live unforgettable moments full of history.

Although during the Second World War the accesses to the Mayan ruins located in Cozumel were lost, we can still find two intact archaeological sites in the jungle that remind us of the amazing past of the Mayan Civilization: we are talking about San Gervasio and El Cedral. Discover why you have to visit them below!

San Gervasio: These are the most visited ruins of Cozumel and they are located in the middle of Cozumel. The story says that this place is where Mayan women went to worship the goddess Ixchel, known by ancient civilizations as the goddess of fertility. Ixchel was long believed to protect childbirth, so women travelled to the island from the southern Mexican states of Chiapas and Campeche.

The ruins consist of several buildings connected by Mayan roads called sacbes.

Guided tours are available in Cozumel to visit these ruins and learn all the details of the Mayan culture that surrounds this historic site.

El Cedral: Located a few kilometers away from the main road of the island. They are considered as the oldest ruins in Cozumel. The most attractive thing about this place is the contrast that arises from the combination of the ruins and a modern church.

Remember to visit these places on your visit to Mexico and take home with you a little piece of this country that welcomes you with open arms, not only to enjoy the biggest competition in small-sided football, but also to delight you with the wonders it has to offer. See you in April 2022!
