Meet cozumel, the magical island host of the Socca World Cup

The island of Cozumel, which ancient name is Cuzamil, means: “nest of woodswallows” in Mayan language. It is one of the most visited islands of the world. However, not many people know its legacy. That’s why today we show you all the things you must know about the history of Cozumel.

Cozumel was a very important settlement for the Mayan culture in the 900s a.C., since it was the place where the temple of the goddess Ixchel, goddess of the fertility and the moon was located at. The Mayan women used to do pilmigrages to bring gifts and pray to the goddess Ixchel.

Cozumel was a very important pier to the Mayan exchange and commercialization. They marketed coffee, corn, rice, jade, and some other things.

Approximately 500 years ago. In 1518, the first Spanish people arrived to the island of Cozumel with the General Juan de Grijalva and Gonzalo Guerrero, which turned into the Father of Miscegenation when he married Zazil-Ha (Mayan princess). That marriage brought the first mix between Spanish and Mayans.

After a long time, the half Blood and the Mayans left the island of Cozumel, letting it uninhabited until the year of 1848, a group of half Blood running away from the caste war in the Yucatan peninsula arrived to Cozumel and thus once again the now world-famous island of Cozumel was founded.

Back in those days, the population in the island were dedicated to the fishing and the farming, and one of their main activity for the economy was the export of wood: the Cedar, from which the population survived for many years.
